Carian Trail: Latmos, Bozburun & Datça
The Carian trail is a long-distance trekking route located in the south western corner of Turkey. With over 800km of trails it offers a rich variety of natural beauty. Isolated mountain slopes, untouched coves, hills full of olive and almond trees, all can be enjoyed while hiking the age-old foot paths that pass by by monuments from the Carian civilization that thrived in this region during Antiquity. We hike from small mountain villages on lush green hills to friendly coastal towns alongside a deep blue sea.

Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival at Milas-Bodrum airport you will be met by your tour guide and driver. We transfer (1hr) to Kapıkırı on the shores of Bafa Lake in the Latmos Mountains for our check-in at the pension. The rugged silhouette of this mountain range has given it its Turkish name Beşparmak Dağları (5 Finger Mountain) that contains wildly fissured masses of gneiss, granite and slate creating a fascinating rocky landscape to walk through. From the shore there will be opportunities to look at birds on lake Bafa, including pelicans, grebes, egrets, herons, storks and flamingos Dinner and overnight in Pension in Kapıkırı.
Day 2: Latmos Mountain: Kapıkırı - Stylos (14km / 5-6hrs / +850m / -850m)
We start our walk following a pre-Roman road. We enjoy a picnic lunch and afterwards follow in st. Paul the Younger's footsteps up the ancient road to the ruins of the monastery at Stylos where we will examine an early Byzantine church. We can decide to walk back or return by car: then we drive with a tractor to nearby Karakaya village and transfer back to Kapıkırı. If time allows we can explore the ruins of ancient Herakleia, a major Greek-Roman city with its amazingly well-preserved fortifications in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in same pension in Kapıkırı.
Day 3: Latmos Mountain: Karahıyıt - Gölyaka (8km / 3hrs / +200m / -450 m)
We drive to Karahıyıt (30mins) and walk to the Yediler Monastery (Monastery of the Seven brothers) where we will see some late Byzantine period wall-paintings. We continue our walk through the strange rock formations of Latmos and discover some fascinating prehistoric rock paintings hidden in crevices under the boulders. We end the day by reaching Gölyaka where we meet our transfer vehicle for the 2,5 hrs drive to Akyaka. Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in hotel in Akyaka.
Day 4: Bozburun: Bahçeli - Taşlıca - Cumhuriyet (Söğüt) (10km / 3-4hrs /+350 m / -550m)
Transfer to Bayır on the Bozburun peninsula (1,5hrs) for a tea break in the village square underneath age-old plane trees. After a short transfer (20mins) to the settlement of Bahçeli we start our scenic walk along the coast following a stony path with fantastic views to the Greek island of Rhodes. The walk is parallel to the dramatic coastline before heading inland to the village of Taşlıca, where donkeys and cows roam the streets freely. After lunch in a friendly village house we take a panoramic path down to Cumhuriyet, enjoying stunning views across the wide bay dotted with tiny islands. Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in pension in Söğüt.
Day 5: Bozburun: Taşlıca (14,5km / 4-5hrs /+500m / -500m)
After a short transfer we start our round walk in Taşlıca. We follow stone paved trails passing by rocky fields surrounding this age-old village. Climbing the rocky slopes above the village where goats and shepherds reign, we descend via a secluded valley passing by the impressive ancient ruins of Phoenix to reach the magical spot of the “40 Wells” where the villagers collected their drinking water until very recently. Transfer back to Söğüt. Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in same pension in Söğüt. If the weather is good, this walk can be changed to a linear walk to ancient Loryma on the southern tip of the Bozburun peninsula ending with a boat transfer back to Söğüt (18km / 5-6hrs).
Day 6: Datça: Kargi - Domuzçukuru (9km / 3hrs)
Our last stop on the Bozburun peninsula is near Turgut (1hr drive) where we visit a well-preserved ancient funeral monument. We continue to the Datça peninsula (1,5hrs) where we make our first walk from Kargi towards Domuzçukuru in the afternoon. It is a nice easy walk during which we can enjoy a swim before walking uphill to meet the transfer vehicle taking us back to Datça. Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in hotel in Datça.
Day 7: Datça: Belen - Knidos (12km / 4-5hrs / +470m / -650m) & Departure
After a transfer to Belen we start our walk towards ancient Knidos. Along the nice path we will see a water mill built -as it appears- in the middle of nowhere. There is a short, tricky section on the beach along some rocks, but not longer than 500m, before we walk right into the site of ancient Knidos. The lighthouse of Deveboynu Burnu sits at the most western tip of the Datça peninsula. Transfer to Milas-Bodrum airport with ferry crossing (3 hours) for evening departure flight.
